Silk plant-based milks impacted by listeria
Some Silk plant-based milks, which were recalled nationwide due to a listeria outbreak that has caused three deaths in Canada, are returning to store shelves. However, the number of people getting sick and dying from the outbreak is still increasing as officials continue to monitor the situation.
Danone Canada, the maker of Silk beverages, told Global News on Thursday that a production line at a factory in Pickering, Ontario, where the contamination was found, was shut down last month and is still closed while authorities inspect it. However, other facilities are boosting production to compensate.
"As a precaution, we've increased the number and frequency of tests at all Silk production and storage facilities for refrigerated products." A spokesperson for Danone Canada has said.
At least 20 people in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and Nova Scotia have been reported sick with listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria bacteria. Out of these cases, 15 people have been hospitalized, and three have died in Ontario.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, the illnesses happened between August 2023 and mid-July 2024.
