Nestle creates protein shots to tackle weight loss industry
Nestlé is introducing protein shots in the United States, designed to help curb appetite for those aiming to lose weight.
Nestlé, known for products like Kit Kat chocolate bars and Nesquik shakes, claims its new drink triggers a natural response in the body similar to popular weight-loss drugs like Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound, though with a much milder effect.
Weekly weight-loss injections imitate a hormone called GLP-1, which is naturally produced in the intestines. This hormone helps reduce appetite and creates a lasting feeling of fullness.
The shake, named Boost Pre-Meal Hunger Support, is designed to be consumed up to 30 minutes before a meal. It’s specifically targeted at people using GLP-1 drugs or other weight-loss medications. The product began rolling out last month.
The shots, priced at $10.99 for a pack of four on Amazon.com and available at select CVS stores, contain 10 grams of whey protein, 45 calories, 1 gram of sugar, and are fat-free. They are marketed as supporting a “natural GLP-1 response to a meal.”
Lora Heisler, chair in human nutrition and director of research at the Rowett Institute, noted that it’s uncertain whether the shot can have a meaningful long-term impact on weight loss efforts.
“I think this protein shot might help trigger a slight increase in GLP-1 release, but you could potentially achieve a similar effect by drinking a glass of milk,” she said.
