Clocks turned back an hour

Canada set their clocks back one hour this morning, marking the end of daylight saving time.

The shift back to standard time gave many Canadians an extra hour of sleep this morning, but it also means it will start getting dark earlier in the evening.

Sunrise will be an hour earlier each morning, except in Yukon, most of Saskatchewan, and parts of eastern Quebec, where the clocks do not change and remain the same throughout the year.

Seasonal time changes are associated with health issues like headaches and heart problems. Although there has been ongoing discussion about ending daylight saving time, and some provinces are open to abolishing it if the U.S. does the same, few have actually made the change.

Rebecca Robillard, a professor at the University of Ottawa and co-chair of the Canadian Sleep Research Consortium, suggests that research indicates it would be better for public health to eliminate the time change and stick to Standard Time permanently.

Daylight saving time will start again on March 9, 2025.
