Canada to Mandate Electric Vehicles in 2026
Under new regulations Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has proposed that one fifth of all vehicles, trucks and SUVs sold in Canada will need to run on electricity.
Manufacturers or importers who do not satisfy the sales target levels could face penalties. This is under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
What is more shocking yet, interesting; is that they want to make 60% of the vehicles sold by 2030 to be electric vehicles. And all the sales of any vehicles to be eletric by 2035. Guilbeault's parliamentary secretary Julie Dabrusin has said, this is about giving Canadians access to the vehicles they want.
These time frames are only few years away, I personally do not believe the sales targets will be reached. Because everyone has been using vehicles that run on gas for decades. But Tesla vehicles have changed that, and people are using electric vehicles; but a full transition from gas powered vehicles to fully electric vehicles could take more years.
The goal here is to reduce green house gas emissions. So the government may provide some credit back to those who purchase electric vehicles, we will just have to wait and see.
